Face lift / Neck lift

During the normal course of aging, the skin and soft tissues of the face lose their natural youthful elasticity. You may notice deep lines around your mouth, drooping jowls, and excess tissue along your neck, and these things may make you look older than you feel. A lower face and neck lift can revitalize your appearance by lifting and tightening the tissues in these areas. Dr. Schmidt has received extensive training and experience performing rejuvenation procedures for the face. His surgical approach focuses on creating a natural look while at the same time achieving a positive, lasting change in the patient’s appearance.

A Lower Face and Neck Lift Can Correct...

Moderate to Severe Jowls
Soft tissue sagging can occur all over the body due to aging and gravity. Over time, this may lead to severe jowls comprised of excess skin and drooping fat. Facelift and neck lift surgery lifts and sculpts the soft tissues of the lower face and neck to improve jowls, create a more defined jawline, and restore youthful contours to the lower face.
Deep Lines and Wrinkles on the Lower Face
With the gradual loss of skin elasticity over time, facial tissues develop lines, wrinkles, and folds. As gravity continues to stretch the skin downward, wrinkles around the mouth and neck become more and more pronounced. A lower face and neck lift tightens and lifts the tissues to get rid of wrinkles and smooth the skin.
Excess Skin and Folds on the Neck
Age-related skin laxity in the neck can lead to the appearance of the dreaded “turkey neck.” Sagging fatty tissues can create a double chin that also ages the appearance. A lower face and neck lift trims and tightens the excess tissues of the neck so that the neckline becomes more slender, defined, and youthful.

Facelift Surgery Techniques

Lower Face and Neck Lift

Dr. Schmidt can perform a lower face and neck lift for patients with moderate to severe jowls. This procedure places incisions behind the ears, in front of the ears, and up into the hairline above the ears. These incisions allow the surgeon to lift and reposition the soft tissues of the lower face and neck. The facial tissues are tightened and repositioned, excess skin and fat are removed, and the face and neckline are sculpted to portray more defined and youthful face and neck contours.

Neck Lift

Dr. Schmidt can perform a neck lift or “neck tuck-up” for patients whose advanced signs of aging are primarily limited to excess skin and folds on the neck. This procedure involves incision placement in front of the ears and in the hairline behind the ears. The superficial muscles of the neck are moved back to a more natural position, and fat and excess skin are removed to refine the neckline. Usually, Dr. Schmidt also makes an incision under the chin so that he can sculpt the tissues in this area and produce more natural-looking results. Neck lift surgery can erase a double chin, get rid of a turkey neck, smooth out neck wrinkles, and rejuvenate the appearance of the neck.

After Your Surgery

After the surgery, you should arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home and assist you for at least 24 to 48 hours. Dr. Schmidt will typically see you the next day and remove your dressing. It is common to experience some discomfort, swelling, bruising, tightness, and even numbness of the facial tissues. These side effects will fade over the first two to three weeks of recovery. Sutures are removed approximately seven to 10 days after the procedure. Overall, the downtime is about the same for both surgical techniques. Most patients can return to work one to two weeks after their surgery. Some tightness or numbness may continue for up to a few months as the tissues and nerves adjust to their new positions. You will be given more specific postoperative instructions to follow to help you have a smooth and quick recovery.

Sedation anesthesia is used to prevent pain during the procedure. During recovery, medications will be provided to ease any discomfort. Postoperative pain is temporary and subsides quickly as the body heals.

Scars are unavoidable after major surgery. While the incisions for a facelift must be made in more visible locations than the incisions for a neck lift, Dr. Schmidt disguises them by placing them in natural tissue folds around the ears and in the hair. As your healing progresses, the scars usually become imperceptible except by close inspection.

Changes to your appearance will be immediately noticeable. As the tissues heal and settle into place over the following months, you will be able to see how much more youthful you look. Results become most noticeable by six months after the procedure. Small, subtle changes may continue to occur for up to one year. The results of facelift and neck lift surgery can help you look as much as five to 10 years younger. Results from facial rejuvenation surgery are long lasting.
