Facial plastic surgeons are specialists who perform cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face. They have a background in head and neck surgery, oral surgery, or general plastic surgery. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (AAFPRS) is the world’s largest specialty association for facial plastic surgery. The mission of the AAFPRS is to “promote the highest quality facial plastic surgery through education, dissemination of professional information, and the establishment of professional standards.” The AAFPRS fellowship program represents the finest postgraduate training program in the world for facial plastic surgeons. Approximately 45 positions are available each year in this program.
The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS) is our specialty’s governing body whose mission is to examine for professional expertise in facial plastic surgery. To achieve board certification, a surgeon must have completed a residency training program that includes facial surgery, have achieved board certification in otolaryngology or general plastic surgery, practiced facial plastic surgery for two years, and successfully complete a two-day written and oral examination.
