Dr. Schmidt’s skin care advice for men

Most skin care products and services are marketed towards women. I’m as guilty of this as anybody. Well, it’s time to give male faces the attention they deserve!

Why should guys care? Well, besides the fact that we should all take pride in our appearance, men who look better are more likely to get promoted, do better in sales, and make more money. You’re also going to be more attractive to the opposite sex (or the same sex, if that’s your thing). But there are so many products out there – how do you know what is best? Here is my skin care advice for men.

Three generations of Schmidt men.
The littlest is now in kindergarten!

Men’s skin is different than women. We have thicker skin with more oil producing glands. Our facial tissue is heavier and more prone to sagging with age. Many of us choose to shave our faces every day. And let’s face it, we’re lazier than women when it comes to skin care. So guys, if you’re ready to elevate your skin care game, here are four SIMPLE things that you can do to maintain your mug.

1) Wash your face!

And not with bar soap! You deserve better than that! A product containing glycolic acid will cut through the oil and cleanse your pores. The result: fewer blackheads and breakouts. It will also help remove dead skin cells so your handsome shines through. You should do it once or twice a day depending on how oily your skin is.

2) Use retinol serum!

No guys, you don’t need all of these.

skin care regimen for you!

Ugh! Another bottle to worry about? Well retinol is the single most powerful skin maintenance product out there. It regularizes skin cell turnover and collagen deposition so your skin looks better. Your pores will also shrink so you’ll be less prone to breakouts and blackheads. Check out my personal experience with it! Use it at bedtime after you wash and before you moisturize.

3) Moisturize!

A really good moisturizer will help keep your skin well hydrated and looking its best. It will also help your skin recover from shaving and prevent razor burn. Using it morning and night is best.

4) Sunscreen!

Officially, you’re supposed to use it every day. Ultraviolet light damages your skin’s collagen bundles and DNA. Over time you not only look weathered, but you can end up with skin cancer. Skin cancer isn’t cute. I will freely admit that I’m not as good about using sunscreen as I should be, but I definitely use it when I’m going to be out in the sun for a while.

When you’re out hitting the round ball with your buddies, don’t forget some SPF! I recommend you use SPF that is at least as high as my handicap (I’m not good, so . . . that’s 30 and above).

Dude skin care doesn’t need to be complicated. With these four steps, you’ll be well on your way to maintaining that handsome mug and keeping it in top shape for years to come.
